The search for Oscar Sanchez-Munoz, 22, continued into its seventh day in Kansas City, Missouri. He is alleged to have killed one person and injured four others in recent shootings. Sanchez-Munoz reportedly showed signs of schizophrenia, with the FBI offering a $25,000 reward for information.
Police informed Fox News that a body, likely that of Sanchez-Munoz, was found by his family in a burned house basement. The family contacted the authorities at 2 p.m. after discovering decomposed remains under debris. Despite several visits to the home since a police standoff led to a fire, the body was found only after debris removal revealed a strong odor.
Sanchez-Munoz, connected to at least six shootings in multiple states, was the focus of a massive manhunt. A search involving investigators, federal partners, and K-9 units previously failed to locate him in the cluttered, partially collapsed, and waterlogged basement in Independence, Missouri.
This discovery likely marks the end of an extensive search that began after shots were fired on Interstate 70, near Arrowhead Stadium during FIFA World Cup events. These shootings resulted in one fatality and serious injuries to several, including an Uber driver transporting soccer fans.
The FBI circulated a wanted notice to enlist public help in finding Sanchez-Munoz, warning he was considered “armed and dangerous.” Acting U.S. Attorney General Todd Blanche speculated publicly that Sanchez-Munoz might be deceased in the Missouri house, though confirmation was pending.
Authorities are working under the assumption that the deceased is Sanchez-Munoz, as clothing on the body matched his during recent attacks. A medical examiner will confirm the identity and cause of death.
There is no further threat to the community, and all surviving victims are expected to recover.
