Fatal Plane Crashes in Missouri and France

A tragic plane crash in Missouri resulted in the death of 11 skydivers and their pilot. This incident transpired near Kansas City shortly after takeoff. Families on the ground witnessed the fiery aftermath. Investigations by the FAA and NTSB are underway, focusing on suspected power issues, although no intentional acts are believed to be involved.

A similar fatal incident occurred in northeastern France with another plane carrying skydivers crashing soon after departing from Nancy-Essey Airport. This crash led to the death of 11 people, including five parachuting instructors, five novice jumpers, and the pilot. The Meurthe-et-Moselle Prefecture revealed that the aircraft encountered a malfunction, causing it to fall vertically, narrowly avoiding a populated area. Prefect Yves Séguy mentioned that had it landed a few meters away, it could have caused further casualties.

Flight tracking data indicated that the Pilatus PC-6 plane banked left shortly after takeoff, crashing near residential homes about 300 yards from the runway. Laurent Nunez, France’s Interior Minister, visited the crash site with Transport Minister Philippe Tabarot. They met with local officials and emergency responders. Nunez expressed deep sorrow and commended the coordinated efforts of police and emergency teams. A medico-psychological emergency unit was established quickly to assist the victims’ families and witnesses.

The investigation is being led by the Paris prosecutor’s office with the Air Transport Gendarmerie’s investigative unit. In a statement, Tabarot called the event a “terrible tragedy” and conveyed condolences to the victims’ families. He noted that the incident is the deadliest skydiving-related aviation accident in France in about 30 years. French investigators from the Bureau d’Enquêtes et d’Analyses are examining the crash to determine its cause.

Witnesses reported hearing the plane’s engine stop just before a loud crash. When they reached the site, they found no signs of life. This tragedy in France happened just weeks after a similar accident in the United States, which killed 12 people roughly 65 miles outside of Kansas City, Missouri. In that case, many of the victims were inexperienced skydivers about to undertake tandem jumps.
