In a heartening scene, rescuers surround a newborn wrapped snugly in a striped blanket, a scene that offers solace to families with missing members after Venezuela’s recent earthquakes. A video, distributed globally by The Associated Press, showcases the rescue of 18-day-old Juan David and his mother, Dayana Patino. They endured a 32-hour ordeal beneath the debris in La Guaira’s northern coastal region.
Amid the wreckage, a voice in Spanish encourages Patino, saying, “You are tough, Mami, you are tough,” as she smiles, still ensnared by the ruins. This moment was shared widely, symbolizing hope amid tragedy.
From a hospital in Caracas, Patino recounted to BBC News her experience when the earthquakes struck. She was doing dishes in her eighth-floor apartment. “I don’t know how I didn’t let go of my baby because I was flying,” she explained, noting how she was slammed against furniture. Her resolve to protect her child, she believes, kept her alive during the chaos. She remarked, “As long as he was alive, I was going to be alive.” Medical care was soon given to both mother and child.
The twin earthquakes that occurred Wednesday left a path of destruction across Venezuela, resulting in at least 1,719 deaths and thousands missing. As of Tuesday, hopes of finding more survivors were waning. On Monday, the United Nations revealed an agreement with Venezuelan authorities to supply 10,000 body bags in readiness for increasing fatalities. Although official figures for the missing remain unconfirmed, UN Emergency Relief Coordinator Tom Fletcher described an estimated 50,000 missing persons as “terrifyingly plausible.” Additionally, the U.N. reported over 5,000 injuries and 12,000 displaced individuals.
Venezuela’s interim President, Delcy Rodríguez, emphasized ongoing efforts to rescue survivors, expressing emotions of hope and solidarity for the affected families. International rescue teams have arrived in recent days to assist, although the critical 72-hour timeframe to reach people trapped under the ruins has passed.
