Supreme Court Ruling on Transgender Athletes: Trump’s Reaction

President Donald Trump has hailed a Supreme Court ruling regarding transgender athletes as a significant triumph. The court made a decision in favor of West Virginia and Idaho, concluding 6-3 against transgender athletes seeking to participate in girls’ sports.

Trump expressed on Truth Social, “BIG WIN: The United States Supreme Court just RULED AGAINST MEN PLAYING IN WOMEN’S SPORTS. Wow! That takes that ridiculous situation off the table!!!” His remarks followed his signing of an executive order banning transgender female athletes from competing in women’s or girls’ sports events, highlighting his administration’s stance on the issue.

As Trump celebrated, the Supreme Court emphasized the authority of individual states to decide on the matter of transgender athletes in women’s sports. Justice Sotomayor, along with Justices Kagan and Jackson, shared nuanced opinions, partially agreeing and dissenting with the judgment. The ruling affirms states’ ability to limit women’s sports to biological females, based on Title IX and the Equal Protection Clause.

We hold that the States may maintain women’s and girls’ sports for biological females. They may determine eligibility for women’s and girls’ sports based on biological sex.

Following the ruling, more than half of the U.S. states are now empowered to enforce the exclusion of transgender athletes from women’s sports without the fear of legal repercussions. Yet, 23 states do not have such laws, and some continue to protect transgender athletes’ participation in girls’ sports.

On February 5, 2025, Trump implemented the “No Men In Women’s Sports” executive order, imposing further restrictions on transgender athletes. This led to conflicts, particularly with Maine Gov. Janet Mills. Trump threatened to cut federal funding to states that defied his order, including Maine, although a judge later required those funds to be reinstated.

Education Secretary Linda McMahon commented after the ruling, stating, “Today’s ruling affirms the common sense right of states to prohibit men from competing in women’s sports, safeguard the integrity of female spaces, and ensure no woman faces discrimination on the basis of sex.” She reiterated the administration’s commitment to restoring Title IX’s protections, ensuring equal educational opportunities for women and girls, and described the ruling as a victory.

Surveys reveal that about 80% of Americans disagree with biological males competing against females in sports. This consensus aligns with the Trump administration’s initiatives related to gender and sports.
