LeBron James to Leave Lakers, Continue Record-Breaking Career Elsewhere

LeBron James, the 41-year-old NBA superstar, has decided to leave the Los Angeles Lakers. He informed the team of his intention to sign with another franchise as an unrestricted free agent. This decision comes after eight seasons with the Lakers, his longest continuous tenure with any NBA team.

During his time in Los Angeles, James led the Lakers to their 17th NBA championship in 2020. He also broke the all-time scoring record and set the record for seasons played, now reaching 23 years. His upcoming 24th season will be with a different team.

The Golden State Warriors have emerged as a potential destination for James. Draymond Green has opted out of his contract, which may create enough salary cap space for James. Last season, James earned $52.6 million but might take a pay cut to join forces with Stephen Curry.

LeBron James is one of the greatest athletes in history. We will always be thankful for his eight years with the Lakers — including the title he led us to in 2020 under the toughest imaginable circumstances and the countless records he broke in purple and gold. We wish him all the best in the future, both on the court and off. He will always be a cherished part of the Lakers family.

James had an outstanding season last year, averaging 20.9 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 7.2 assists per game. He set various NBA records, including games played, all-time wins, and field goals made. Despite his age, James remains a top free agent in this offseason.

James marked his 22nd All-Star appearance last year. He continued his streak of averaging over 20 points per game each season throughout his career. However, he faced physical challenges, missing the first 14 games due to a sciatic nerve issue. His field goal attempts were a career low, and he missed 22 regular-season games, which made him ineligible for end-of-season awards. This ended his streak of 21 consecutive seasons with All-NBA honors.

The Lakers advanced to the second round of the playoffs last season, missing Luka Doncic throughout the postseason. However, the team plans to build around Doncic, who signed a three-year, $165-million extension last summer. Additionally, the Lakers finalized a four-year, $185-million max contract with Austin Reaves.

With several players entering free agency or holding player options, the Lakers are in a position to reconstruct their roster around Doncic. The team aims to focus on acquiring athletic, defensively skilled wings, proficient shooters, and a rim-running center as revealed by their plans to “retrofit” the roster, according to Rob Pelinka, President of Basketball Operations and General Manager.
