Health Crisis Looms Post-Earthquakes in Venezuela

As the clock ticks away in the efforts to rescue survivors of the recent earthquakes in Venezuela, attention is shifting to the lasting impacts of the disaster on the region. In particular, the destruction of water infrastructure raises alarms over the potential spread of diseases like cholera and typhoid fever.

Health care workers are expressing concerns over the lack of clean water, which was already scarce before the earthquakes. The failure of the water systems now exacerbates the risk of contamination.

The water distribution system collapsed as a result of the earthquake. – Susana Arroyo, spokeswoman for the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies

Susana Arroyo, speaking from the capital, Caracas, highlighted that in severely affected areas such as La Guaira, bottled water is essential for everyday activities, including bathing, handwashing, and cooking. This lack of basic sanitation is critical, as the sewage system has been destroyed, leaving many without access to toilets.

La Guaira was already facing a water supply crisis before the disaster. Residents previously depended on mobile water tankers for their daily needs. The tremors have deepened these existing problems, emphasizing the urgent need for solutions to prevent further health crises.
