The U.S. men’s national team has shown strong performance in the current World Cup, having won its group and secured a favorable position for the knockout round. The competition intensifies as the Round of 32 unfolds on Wednesday in Santa Clara, California, where the U.S. will face Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The stakes are high for the U.S., as they aim for a significant victory over a European team—a feat not achieved since 2021. A win would mark the team’s first World Cup knockout success since 2002. Although Bosnia is not considered one of the soccer giants like France or Spain, they are determined contenders. Ranked 64th by FIFA, the Bosnian team entered the tournament after an impressive playoff victory over Italy and advanced to the knockout stage with a draw against Canada and a win over Qatar.
While the U.S. enters the match as the favorite, surprises in knockout games are not uncommon, highlighted by Germany’s recent loss to Paraguay. U.S. coach Mauricio Pochettino emphasized the importance of treating this match as their ‘World Cup final’ to ensure focus and determination.
The U.S. team expects to have a fully healthy lineup, including star winger Christian Pulisic, who returns after recovering from a calf injury sustained in their opening game. With Pulisic, who is eager to play, in the squad, the U.S. hopes to leverage his skill and experience. “I felt great in the game against Turkey,” Pulisic said, expressing his readiness for the upcoming match.
Turning to Bosnia, the spotlight is on American-born Esmir Bajraktarević. The 21-year-old, originally from Wisconsin, represents Bosnia and Herzegovina, following his family’s origins and significant history. Bajraktarević switched allegiances in 2024 to play for Bosnia, making a notable impact by scoring the penalty that secured their World Cup spot. His passion and commitment resonate deeply with Bosnian fans, as noted by coach Sergej Barbarez.
This marks Bosnia’s second World Cup appearance, with their last being in 2014. As both teams prepare for this decisive match, U.S. supporters are hopeful, given the team’s successful advancement to the Round of 32.
