Indiana Pacers Select Braden Smith in NBA Draft

The Indiana Pacers faced a challenging situation in this year’s NBA draft with only one pick. Selecting 28th overall, the Pacers had limited options and uncertainty about available players.

Despite these challenges, the Pacers chose to draft Braden Smith, a point guard from Purdue. This decision shows strategic thinking, as Smith brings significant promise to the team.

Cameron Salerno of CBS Sports has awarded the Pacers a B grade for selecting Smith. This is considered a strong evaluation, with potential for an even higher grade. Salerno stated, “Indiana has had success developing point guards in its system. Smith was one of the best pure floor generals throughout his entire college career at Purdue and will have a chance to crack the rotation immediately in his home state. He also offers insurance and depth behind Tyrese Haliburton, who missed the entire 2025-26 season due to a torn Achilles.”

Smith stands out as a remarkable player. Despite not being a top draft pick, his talent is evident. During his time at Purdue, he led the NCAA in assists, a significant accomplishment that could have resulted in a higher draft selection. Yet, his physical height—under 6 feet—became a factor for scouts.

Nevertheless, Smith’s potential is clear. Comparisons to players like Jalen Brunson suggest that success in the NBA isn’t solely about size. For the Pacers, Smith is a promising addition, welcomed back to his home state, ready to make an impact.
