White Sox Park Inauguration
On July 1, 1910, more than 28,000 fans gathered to witness the opening of White Sox Park, later known as Comiskey Park. The Chicago White Sox celebrated the day with a 2-0 victory over the St. Louis Browns.
Weather Records and Temperature Extremes
The National Weather Service in Chicago keeps records of July 1’s weather. In 1956, the high temperature reached 103 degrees. In 1982, the low temperature touched 46 degrees. The precipitation record was set in 1901, with 1.56 inches of rain. In 1920, a trace of snowfall was recorded, an unusual event for July.
Opening of Naval Station Great Lakes
The U.S. Navy training facility near North Chicago opened its doors on July 1, 1911. This facility, known as Naval Station Great Lakes, is the Navy’s largest training base and the site of its only boot camp. The decision to establish this station came in 1904. The need for an inland training school that could accept recruits from central and southwestern areas was recognized. The first recruit, Joseph Gregg from Terre Haute, Indiana, arrived two days after the opening. President William Howard Taft attended Gregg’s graduation with the first class of 300 sailors.
First Flight Across Lake Michigan
In 1913, aviator Logan A. “Jack” Vilas made history by being the first to fly across Lake Michigan. Vilas, with passenger William Bastar, departed from St. Joseph, Michigan, in a Curtiss hydroplane. They reached Grant Park in Chicago in one hour and 34 minutes, flying at an altitude of 4,000 feet. Vilas later explained the delay was due to challenging air currents.
Brookfield Zoo and Its Celebrity Resident
When Brookfield Zoo opened to the public on July 1, 1934, a large crowd of nearly 60,000 visitors was greeted by a pink cockatoo named Cookie. The bird lived longer than any other animal present at the zoo that day.
Wrigley Field’s First Night Game
Wrigley Field hosted its first night game on July 1, 1943. It featured women from the All-American Girls Professional Ball League in an all-star benefit match. Four years prior, Comiskey Park had hosted the city’s first major league night game.
Implementation of Illinois State Income Tax
On July 1, 1969, Illinois introduced its first state income tax. Republican Governor Richard Ogilvie collaborated with Mayor Richard J. Daley to secure the necessary votes to pass the bill. The Illinois House agreed on a 2.5% flat-rate tax for individuals and 4% for corporations.
Official Illinois State Flag
The design of Illinois’ state flag became official in 1970. The flag features a white field with the word ‘Illinois’ and the emblem portion of the state seal. Over five decades later, in March 2025, Illinois residents voted to retain this design.
The 2012 Derecho
A destructive storm on July 1, 2012 led to power outages, roof damages, and transportation disruptions in the Chicago area. High winds, observed first in DeKalb, reached speeds of 70-90 mph across the region. Around 60 novice kayakers required rescue from the Chicago River due to turbulent conditions.
