Commemorative Social Security Cards for America’s 250th Anniversary

The Social Security Administration (SSA) plans to issue a special commemorative Social Security card for babies born during the United States’ 250th anniversary. These limited-edition cards will be available from July 2 to December 31, 2026, and will feature the Freedom 250 logo. They will function like standard Social Security cards, serving as one of the first official federal documents for many American children.

This initiative coincides with America’s 250th birthday celebrations. Frank J. Bisignano, SSA Commissioner, emphasized the significance of this celebration for the nation’s history and the creation of Social Security over 90 years ago. Under President Donald J. Trump’s leadership, there is a commitment to enhancing Social Security services for current and future generations.

The commemorative cards will only be issued to babies born during this six-month period through the SSA’s Enumeration at Birth program. Children born outside this timeframe or those who need replacement cards will get the standard version. The issuance process does not require additional paperwork or fees from parents, as the cards will be automatically generated when parents complete birth registration in hospitals, birthing centers, or through licensed midwives.

The commemorative cards will not incur extra costs for families or taxpayers. The design will not affect a child’s Social Security number or the card’s legal function. Subsequent replacements or duplicates will not bear the Freedom 250 design.

Approximately 3.5 million children are born in the U.S. each year, suggesting many families could receive the commemorative card during this period. The SSA has been issuing Social Security numbers through the Enumeration at Birth program since 1987. This program engages hospitals and state vital records offices in facilitating the process.

The SSA warns parents to be vigilant against scammers exploiting this announcement. No legitimate request for payment, registration, or additional information beyond the birth registration process will come from SSA for these commemorative cards.

This initiative is part of broader efforts, including the launch of Trump Accounts. These tax-advantaged investment accounts aim to assist families in saving for their children’s future. For babies born in the 250th year, the Social Security card will not only be a critical federal document but also a memento of a unique moment in U.S. history.
