High Casualty Numbers in Ongoing Russia-Ukraine Conflict

A recent study highlights the significant human cost of the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, now in its fourth year. Since Russia invaded its neighbor in February 2022, more than two million troops from both sides have been killed or injured.

The Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington released the study, which indicates that Russia has experienced greater losses with 1.4 million troops either killed or wounded. Among these, 450,000 were fatalities, a figure that surpasses U.S. war fatalities since World War II by four times.

Ukrainian forces have sustained between 525,000 and 625,000 casualties, including 125,000 to 150,000 deaths. Yet, estimating the exact numbers of casualties remains challenging. Moscow is thought to consistently underreport its losses, while Ukraine does not release official casualty numbers. The study uses figures from American and British governmental estimates along with other sources.

These statistics reveal Russia’s minimal advances in the conflict, with troops moving at times less than 165 feet per day. Despite the challenges, Ukrainian forces gained more strategic ground in February compared to previous months since 2023 by launching offensives in the south, according to analysts.
