Rich Eisen to Step Down from NFL Game Commentary

Rich Eisen has announced that he will no longer serve as a play-by-play commentator for NFL games. This decision follows ESPN’s acquisition of the NFL Network. In an interview with Sports Illustrated, Eisen stated, “I believe I am done,” when questioned about his future in game commentary for the upcoming season.

Eisen has been providing commentary for NFL Network since 2018, covering many international games. He often collaborated with color analyst Kurt Warner during these broadcasts.

According to sources at OutKick, ESPN decided to remove Eisen from the broadcast lineup. Dave Pasch is expected to take over for Eisen on NFL Network-exclusive games. Pasch, previously with the Arizona Cardinals, is highly regarded as one of ESPN’s top play-by-play voices.

Eisen’s commentary often faced criticism for over-reliance on clichés and limited vocabulary.

Eisen acknowledged his challenges with game-calling, attributing them to his instincts as a studio host. He noted that his style as a studio host involves filling air time, contrasting with the silence valued in play-by-play commentary. Eisen commented, “It’s the exact opposite when you’re calling a game. Your job is to shut the f up after the big moment happens.”

Despite stepping down from game commentary, Eisen’s role at ESPN remains secure. He holds a contract with ESPN to continue his daily radio show on ESPN Radio and Disney+. He has also hosted special SportsCenter editions. Eisen remains a prominent figure, albeit with a focus on studio hosting rather than live-game broadcasts.

Eisen is recognized for his contributions as a studio anchor, often bringing sports discussions to a broader audience. However, he has faced criticism for frequently referencing his past career performances and for guest appearances on his radio show that sometimes delve into political topics.

ESPN acknowledges Eisen’s strengths in areas outside live-game commentary. His enduring role in different programming capacities underscores his overall value to ESPN and the broader sports media landscape.
