The Patrouille de France, part of the French Air and Space Force, flew near the National Mall, trailing colored smoke to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the United States on June 22, 2026, in Washington. Despite the celebration, a substantial number of Americans experience a lack of patriotic sentiment.
Current levels of national pride are lower than any point in the past 25 years, driven by various observable factors. Historically, the country’s bureaucratic and judicial systems managed collective issues effectively. However, these systems seem to be losing their control.
Congress faces a public approval rating as low as that of head lice and used-car salesmen. Legislation now appears crafted for the benefit of donors, obscured by complex legal language, much like software designed to conceal backdoors. The Supreme Court, once seen as neutral, has lost favor among the majority of Americans, appearing to cater to those in power.
Organized religious institutions that once served as community pillars are now diminishing. Churches are often repurposed into markets or nightclubs, leaving behind an eroding social fabric of community ties and goodwill. As these connections fade, individuals face rising rents, stagnant wages, and a deep loneliness.
Political leadership has also failed to inspire. The White House has become an arena for ineffective leadership. President Joe Biden’s term was marked by indecisiveness, while President Trump’s return featured questionable management and aggressive tactics abroad.
Electoral processes have shifted significantly. Losing candidates no longer concede gracefully, instead alleging conspiracies, while winners see their success as a license to dominate. Elections resemble contentious disputes more than peaceful power transfers.
The tech industry has capitalized on anger and division, favoring conflict over agreement to boost engagement. Algorithms create echo chambers that reinforce fears and skew perceptions of reality, leading to polarized views.
Artificial intelligence complicates matters further, potentially distorting media landscapes beyond recognition. The discussions could extend to questioning basic truths, such as the color of the sky.
Despite institutional failures, most Americans remain fundamentally decent individuals who wish to live peacefully and responsibly. The lack of celebration for the country’s milestone anniversary reflects widespread fatigue instead of unpatriotic sentiments.
