Tragic Boat Accident in Lake Geneva Amid Severe Storm

Severe weather struck southern Wisconsin on Friday, leading to the tragic capsizing of a boat on Geneva Lake. The accident resulted in the deaths of three individuals, with seven others being rescued. The incident highlights the dangers of the storm that swept through the area.

Walworth County experienced significant damage as the storm felled trees, downed power lines, and damaged buildings. According to Tom Hausner, undersheriff for the Walworth County Sheriff’s department, numerous injuries were reported. However, detailed information about the identities and conditions of the deceased and rescued individuals remains unavailable.

The local authorities in Lake Geneva have begun an investigation into the incident. Mayor Todd Krause declared an emergency, noting that one person suffered minor injuries from a falling tree. Power outages affected several parts of the city.

Emergency services faced challenges due to multiple 911 calls regarding storm damage and people trapped in buildings. Responders faced delays because of blocked roads caused by downed trees and power lines.

Power lines are all over the place. We are urging people to stay away,

Hausner added. He mentioned that additional support was requested from neighboring counties and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.

Geneva Lake is a popular tourist destination, especially for visitors from the Chicago area. The population in Walworth County significantly increases during holiday weekends. This storm prompted many cities across the Midwest to cancel holiday festivities and postpone fireworks displays.

The National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm watch for Lake Geneva, forecasting heavy rain with potential lingering showers into Independence Day and possible continued showers and thunderstorms over the weekend.
