Paul Pelosi Faces Misdemeanor Charge After Hit-and-Run

Paul Pelosi, husband of former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, is facing a misdemeanor hit-and-run charge. Authorities allege that Pelosi struck a parked vehicle in Napa County, California, on Friday and drove away before his vehicle became inoperable.

The incident occurred in Yountville, a little over an hour away from San Francisco. A witness reported seeing a brown convertible hit an unoccupied parked car and then proceed north. Deputies located the damaged convertible blocking part of the road and identified Paul Pelosi as the driver, aged 86.

The sheriff’s office noted that Pelosi admitted he knew he had collided with something but was unaware of what it was. He continued driving until his vehicle no longer functioned.

The Napa County Sheriff’s Office stated that alcohol was not involved in the crash. Tests showed no alcohol on the Preliminary Alcohol Screening Device, ruling out Driving Under the Influence. Investigators confirmed Pelosi as responsible for the collision. He was not arrested but will have the case referred to the Napa County District Attorney’s Office for potential prosecution.

Further, the sheriff’s office plans to submit a driver re-evaluation for Pelosi to the California DMV, a standard procedure for elderly drivers.

This incident occurs over two years after Pelosi had pleaded guilty to misdemeanor drunken driving in a May 2022 crash in Napa County. His sentence included three years’ probation, a short jail term satisfied through custody credits and a work program, DUI education, installation of an ignition interlock device for a year, and fines and restitution to the injured party. In contrast, DUI was ruled out in the recent crash.

Despite stepping away from his public life, Pelosi remains in the news following an October 2022 attack. An intruder, David DePape, sought Nancy Pelosi, but attacked Paul Pelosi with a hammer in their San Francisco home. DePape received a life sentence on state charges in addition to a prior 30-year federal prison sentence for the attack.

Paul Pelosi suffered a skull fracture and other serious injuries in the assault.

Nancy Pelosi has served California’s 11th congressional district in San Francisco for many years.
