Paul Pelosi, husband of Representative Nancy Pelosi, is facing a charge related to a hit-and-run incident that occurred in Yountville, California. The Napa County Sheriff’s Office released a statement regarding this on Friday afternoon.
A representative for the Pelosi family informed Newsweek via email that Mr. Pelosi has apologized to the vehicle owner and promised to take responsibility for the damages. Speaker Nancy Pelosi, however, will not be commenting further on this personal issue.
Incident Details
The accident took place around 2:30 p.m. local time in Napa County. A witness reported to 911 that a brown convertible collided with a parked, unoccupied car and then left the scene. No injuries resulted from the crash.
Authorities identified Paul Pelosi, 86, as the driver. He was not detained for this misdemeanor. The sheriff’s office stated that they would forward a driver re-evaluation request to the California DMV, a standard procedure for older drivers.
Paul Pelosi admitted to deputies that he realized he struck something but did not know what. He continued driving until his vehicle no longer functioned.
“No alcohol was detected during testing, so Driving Under the Influence was ruled out,” the sheriff’s office reported.
Paul Pelosi’s Legal History
Pelosi previously pleaded guilty in May 2022 to driving under the influence in Napa County. He received a five-day jail sentence and three years of probation. However, he served only two days behind bars and received credit for good behavior for two additional days. He completed the remainder of the sentence through a local court work program.
His probation conditions required him to attend a three-month drinking driver class and install an ignition interlock device in his vehicle. He also had to pay approximately $5,000 in victim restitution and nearly $2,000 in fines.
Historical records show that in 1957, Paul, then aged 16, was involved in a car accident that resulted in the death of his older brother, David Pelosi. The incident reportedly led to David’s death due to a neck brace after the vehicle overturned.
