Chris Johnson Faces ALS Battle

Chris Johnson, a remarkable figure in NFL history for rushing over 2,000 yards in a single season, has revealed his battle with ALS. This disease affects not only him but also those around him.

Ryan Fitzpatrick, who played alongside Johnson with the Tennessee Titans, reflected on their brief yet impactful connection. Describing Johnson as a talented teammate, Fitzpatrick shared a personal memory. “The 100th touchdown pass I threw in the NFL was to Chris Johnson,” he recalled. Johnson had signed that football with a personal note, a gesture Fitzpatrick treasures.

“To my cool white boy. Congrats on number 100,” Johnson wrote.

ALS presents immense challenges, as it slowly takes control away from individuals. It impacts not only physical abilities but also the lives of family and friends. Expressing support, Fitzpatrick emphasized the collective hope for Johnson’s well-being.

In a detailed social media update, Johnson highlighted research linking repetitive head trauma to ALS. Studies suggest that NFL players face a higher incidence of this disease compared to the general population.

Fitzpatrick acknowledged the known risks associated with football. Despite these dangers, he expressed no regrets about his football career, understanding the broader scope of its impact on life.

“Football has given me a lot in life,” Fitzpatrick stated. “It’s something I would pursue again, and I’m supportive of my kids if they choose to follow this path.” However, he mentioned the harsh realities of aging, drawing from personal loss and witnessing friends and family affected by ALS.

ALS, or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, remains incurable. It disrupts brain-muscle communication, ultimately compromising basic functions like walking and breathing. This progressive disease burdens not only those afflicted but also their loved ones.

Johnson’s NFL career spanned from 2008 to 2017, during which he played for teams like the Titans, Jets, and Cardinals.

The sports community rallies around him during this difficult time, offering love and support to him and his family.
