A fireworks display went wrong at BMO Stadium on Friday night. During a post-game event, fireworks shot across the field and into the stands, scattering fans for safety. The event followed a match where Angel City FC won 2-0 against Orlando Pride, ending a month-long break.
Videos captured the unexpected incident as fireworks sent sparks and smoke over the pitch. Initially intended as a climactic finale, some fireworks launched sideways into the half-filled stands. Jade Greenhut, a season ticket-holder, recorded the chaos from her club seat. Her footage shows fireworks heading toward the Angel City bench, causing people to shout and flee.
In a statement, a spokesperson from the soccer club confirmed no serious injuries occurred. The club hired a third-party vendor for the pyrotechnics. Stephanie Rudnick, head of communications for Angel City FC, confirmed the malfunction in an email from Australia. She stated, “Our medical and safety teams were on site and ready to respond.” All attendees left the stadium safely.
The club plans to review the incident with their pyrotechnics vendor. Greenhut noted that many fans had left during the 20-minute gap between the game and the fireworks, reducing the risk of harm. The situation calmed by the time the stadium emptied. Greenhut’s ticket ambassador apologized, stating they had done this before with the Los Angeles Football Club and faced no issues. Greenhut remained positive about the match performance but suggested using drones next time.
