NYC Mayor’s Wife Criticized for Missing America 250 Celebration

Rama Duwaji, the spouse of New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, attracted criticism over the Fourth of July weekend. She reportedly attended an Islamic spiritual retreat in Mallorca, Spain, while the U.S. celebrated its 250th anniversary.

The New York Post reported that Duwaji was seen at Newark International Airport, boarding a flight to Palma. She attended a sold-out retreat organized by The Women Sanctuary.

Councilwoman Joann Ariola expressed her dissatisfaction, remarking, “Nothing says ‘America 250’ quite like skipping the celebration for a Mediterranean vacation.” Councilman Frank Morano also voiced disappointment, stating that the First Lady should have taken part in the city’s significant civic event.

Duwaji’s absence was considered a missed opportunity for the city.

Morano remarked that while officials’ family members can travel, the timing of this trip was unfortunate. “No one is saying elected officials and their families can’t take vacations, but this was a moment to show up for the city and for the country, and she missed it,” he said.

Fox News Digital reached out to the mayor’s office for a statement but received no immediate response. It’s reported that Duwaji was not accompanied by officers from the couple’s taxpayer-funded NYPD detail.

Conservative commentator Arynne Wexler criticized the timing of Duwaji’s retreat, noting that Mayor Mamdani had asked New Yorkers to conserve energy during the heat wave while his wife traveled abroad.

The Women Sanctuary’s retreat, titled “Plants Of The Quran | 6th Edition,” focused on plants mentioned in the Quran such as olives, pomegranates, and dates. It featured workshops, meals, and spiritual reflection.

Mayor Mamdani stayed in New York City, addressing energy conservation and participating in city events for America 250. He emphasized cooling centers and extended pool operations due to the heat wave.
