Reflecting on 50 Years as an American Immigrant

As America celebrates its 250th anniversary, I reflect on a personal milestone: my 50 years as an American. This journey began when I left the Soviet Union with my mother and grandmother in December 1975. We spent a few months in Vienna and Rome before arriving in Los Angeles on April 28, 1976, just in time for the nation’s bicentennial celebrations. I was 6 years old then.

Reflecting on these years, I understand I have witnessed and experienced one-fifth of America’s rich history. My transition to life in the United States was deeply influenced by the courage and determination of my mother and grandmother. They chose to seek new opportunities and ensure a brighter future for me.

Living in America for this long has allowed me to see its evolution and transformations firsthand. The country’s history unfolded in various ways as societal changes, technological advancements, and cultural shifts took place. I remain forever grateful for the decision made by my mother and grandmother, which allowed me to become part of this great nation’s ongoing story.
