A review by Fox News Digital, based on employment data from the New York Times, reveals that over 10,000 federal attorneys, representing about 20% of federal government lawyers, have departed since early 2025. Among them, more than 100 attorneys were noted to have moved to Democratic attorneys general’s offices. Some of these attorneys are actively engaged in legal cases against the Trump administration.

Public records from LinkedIn, state directories, and court documents were analyzed to track the movements of attorneys from federal positions to state roles. These sources, however, do not clarify individual reasons for leaving federal service.

“Oregon DOJ is a destination for talented public servants,” stated Oregon Attorney General Dan Rayfield. He credits the state with drawing experienced lawyers from the U.S. Department of Justice to address crucial issues like consumer protection and environmental cases.

Many attorneys who shifted to state offices are focusing on lawsuits challenging the Trump administration. Examples include Massachusetts’ legal battle over restrictions on transgender healthcare, California’s challenge of research grant terminations, and efforts to curb Trump’s National Guard deployments.

Democratic attorneys general are cooperating closely, often coordinating lawsuits and legal strategies across states. This collaboration is seen as vital in resisting the Trump administration. Massachusetts Attorney General Andrea Joy Campbell emphasized the coalition’s dedication to defending rights and the rule of law.

Federal lawyers who have joined Democratic attorneys general often came from areas such as civil rights, immigration, and environmental law. These lawyers generally held nonpartisan, career roles in the federal government before transitioning to state positions.

Prominent attorneys, some with decades of experience in federal service, have made the move to Democratic state offices. This includes experienced professionals like a lawyer with 20 years at the DOJ, who now plays a senior role in Colorado’s legal battles against the Trump administration.

The Trump administration disputes claims of operational disruption despite the exodus of federal lawyers. A DOJ spokeswoman highlighted significant accomplishments, such as indicting more criminals and reducing murder rates, arguing that these successes demonstrate effective governance despite staffing changes.

The administration has recruited new attorneys who align ideologically with its goals, reportedly hiring over 3,200 new lawyers. The DOJ maintains that reductions in staff were strategic to improve efficiency and align with the administration’s mission.
