U.S. Navy Identifies Missing Sailor from Arabian Sea Helicopter Incident

The U.S. Navy has identified Cmdr. Gabriel Edwards as the sailor who went missing during a helicopter incident in the Arabian Sea on July 1, 2026. Edwards was aboard an MH-60S Sea Hawk helicopter that had to make an emergency water landing. Three of the four crew members were rescued, but Edwards remained missing despite an extensive search effort.

The U.S. Navy conducted a search covering over 14,000 square miles, involving various naval and Air Force assets. However, the search was suspended on Sunday after more than 102 hours without success.

Cmdr. Edwards, who led the Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron 5, was celebrated for his leadership and commitment. Rear Adm. Todd Cimicata of Carrier Strike Group 10 expressed condolences and support to the Edwards family, stating that Cmdr. Edwards’ legacy will be remembered.

Acting Secretary of the Navy Hung Cao announced Edwards’ posthumous promotion to captain. He expressed gratitude to all involved in the search and those supporting Edwards’ family.

Edwards hailed from Oakland, Oregon. His naval career spanned 20 years, beginning after he earned a physics degree through the Naval ROTC. He received his aviator wings in 2008, serving in various roles, including his recent command of HSC-5.

He is survived by his wife, Rebecca, and two children. Rebecca Edwards expressed her heartfelt thanks to those who helped search for her husband. She described Cmdr. Edwards as a devoted leader and a cherished family man.

The three rescued crew members returned to the USS George H.W. Bush. The Navy is investigating the incident, with no current signs of hostile action as the cause of the emergency landing.
