Mitch McConnell, former Senate GOP leader, is hospitalized with undisclosed health issues over three weeks after admission. No updates have been provided on his condition by his aides, raising questions about his recovery and ability to return when the Senate reconvenes following a break.
Spokespersons confirm communications between McConnell and leading Senate Republicans. Senator John Thune, current Senate Majority Leader, spoke with McConnell on Monday, engaging in a detailed conversation on various topics, including national security. Similarly, Senator John Barrasso, the Senate’s No. 2 Republican, had a 20-minute phone call discussing upcoming Senate races, the Supreme Court, and other subjects.
Republican strategist Scott Jennings reported speaking with McConnell about politics and foreign policy, indicating McConnell remains engaged and optimistic about returning to Senate.
“Senator McConnell was fully engaged and is eager to get back to the Senate,” stated Barrasso’s spokeswoman, Kate Noyes.
McConnell’s hospitalization history includes a concussion from a fall in March 2023, resulting in a significant absence. Additionally, he experienced freezing incidents during public appearances. His early polio illness affected his mobility, contributing to recent falls, including two significant injuries: a fractured shoulder in 2019, and a wrist sprain from falling at a GOP event.
McConnell has served in the Senate since 1984, leading Republicans from 2007 until last year. Despite recent health challenges, he remains active when the Senate is in session, often utilizing a wheelchair.
