FIFA Refereeing Chief Addresses Controversy
Pierluigi Collina, the head of FIFA refereeing, has addressed the criticism surrounding the officiating in Argentina’s 3-2 win over Egypt during the World Cup round of 16. Collina asserted that the match officials carried out their duties with complete independence and dismissed allegations of bias.
In a detailed interview on inside.fifa.com, Collina acknowledged that criticism is a part of the football landscape. However, he strongly condemned any questioning regarding the integrity of the referees, particularly after Egypt voiced complaints about the officiating post-match.
Constructive discussion about decisions will always be part of football, but unfounded allegations have no place in our sport.
Collina emphasized that the integrity of FIFA World Cup officials should not be doubted. He made it clear that no external influence, not even from FIFA’s President Gianni Infantino, could sway refereeing decisions.
Egypt’s Claims of Unfair Treatment
Despite exiting the tournament, Egypt alleged unfair treatment in the match as Argentina overturned a 2-0 lead with a dramatic stoppage-time winner by Enzo Fernandez. Coach Hossam Hassan suggested post-match that there might have been pressure on the referees to favor Argentina, a claim Collina firmly disputed.
Egypt’s Football Association voiced concerns over several incidents they believed directly impacted the game’s outcome. A crucial point of contention was the disallowed goal by Mostafa Zico in the second half, which they argued was wrongly nullified due to a supposed non-existent foul.
Additionally, there was frustration over a challenge on Mohamed Salah not being penalized shortly before the decisive Argentine goal.
VAR Decisions Backed
Collina asserted that VAR correctly intervened in overturning Zico’s goal, identifying a foul by Marwan Attia on Lisandro Martinez during the buildup.
We believe that a foul is a foul.
Collina further elaborated that FIFA was content with how VAR’s principles were applied throughout the tournament. VAR had also supported the decision not to award a penalty to Egypt, determining the contact between Salah and Julian Alvarez to be within the scope of ‘normal football contact.’
Despite some subjective elements in football officiating decisions, Collina concluded by reaffirming FIFA’s commitment to upholding the integrity and fairness of the sport.
