The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) strongly opposes the release of Valmir Djempsley, a 20-year-old illegal immigrant from Haiti, accused of fatally stabbing a coworker in Michigan. The incident took place at a food processing plant in Coldwater on June 30.
Djempsley faces charges in the death of 21-year-old Brandon Eduardo Velasquez Chavez. The altercation began as an argument between the two men, escalating when Djempsley allegedly chased Chavez and stabbed him in the back. Djempsley claimed that Chavez had headbutted him during their dispute.
The tragic event occurred at the Clemens Food Group plant, where Chavez succumbed to his injuries despite efforts by first responders to save him.
Local prosecutors highlighted Djempsley’s presence on a work visa at the time. According to DHS, Djempsley originally entered the U.S. illegally through Texas in 2024 and was later released under the Biden administration. Charged with murder, Djempsley has entered a plea of not guilty. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has requested a detainer to keep Djempsley in custody.
Acting DHS Assistant Secretary Lauren Bis criticized the Biden administration, stating, “This illegal alien barbarically stabbed his coworker to death. This murderer was released into American communities by the Biden administration. If it weren’t for the reckless open border policies of the Biden administration, this criminal never would have been in our country in the first place, and his victim would still be alive.”
ICE has asked Michigan not to release Djempsley without notifying their agency. Details from an affidavit obtained by the Sturgis Journal reveal the argument between the men centered on Chavez using one of Djempsley’s knives.
During a court hearing, a Branch County prosecutor remarked, “The defendant at the time of this crime was a guest in our country. He should have been on his best behavior, but instead, he spilled the lifeblood of another human being. This is the most serious violation known to humankind.”
Djempsley remains in custody at the Branch County jail, as he was denied bond.
