Josh Allen Tops NFL Quarterback Rankings Over Patrick Mahomes

Josh Allen of the Buffalo Bills ranks as the top quarterback in the NFL, according to a recent ESPN survey of executives, coaches, and scouts. Although Kansas City Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes led last year, Allen has now taken the lead. ESPN reporter Jeremy Fowler noted that Allen worked hard for every vote to achieve this position.

Allen’s composite average ranking of 2.10 per ballot played a key role in overcoming Mahomes’ first-place votes, standing at 34.1% compared to Mahomes’ 41.5%. An NFL general manager remarked that Allen, as the only player in history with at least 200 passing and 50 rushing touchdowns, deserves the top spot.

While Mahomes continues to have a stronger legacy, with more Super Bowl titles, Allen challenges him as the current best quarterback. From 2023 to 2025, Allen’s performance included:

  • 11,705 passing yards
  • 82 passing touchdowns
  • 34 interceptions
  • 98.6 passer rating

Mahomes recorded:

  • 11,698 passing yards
  • 75 passing touchdowns
  • 36 interceptions
  • 91.9 passer rating

Allen excelled in the rushing game, scoring 41 touchdowns, compared to Mahomes’ seven. This brings Allen’s total touchdowns to 123 over the span, while Mahomes has 82. Despite the narrow differences, Allen’s performance places him slightly ahead.

Analysts often compare this dynamic to Tom Brady versus Peyton Manning, where Brady had the rings, but Manning excelled weekly. Similarly, Mahomes has the postseason triumphs, but Allen’s consistent play gives him an edge.

Some argue Mahomes benefits from Andy Reid and Brett Veach, iconic figures in the NFL. In contrast, Allen benefits from the Bills’ strong offensive line, rated third by Sharp Football Analysis for 2026, compared to the Chiefs’ 23rd ranking.

Buffalo’s James Cook led the NFL in rushing last season with over 1,600 yards, while Kansas City’s Kareem Hunt reached just 611 yards. Both quarterbacks harness different team strengths to shine.

The survey reveals the tight competition between Allen and Mahomes. Some media analysts critique Allen’s role contrasted with other quarterbacks, like Lamar Jackson. Yet, the football community sees Allen firmly in Mahomes’ class.

Currently, industry experts recognize Josh Allen as the top NFL quarterback. His ongoing performance puts him in a prominent position entering the 2026 season.
