States must act to reverse the reduction in residential psychiatric treatment options for youth. Without action, juvenile detention could become a default choice. This situation is concerning in light of cases like that of Joshua Beasley Jr.
Joshua’s experience began in 2018 when he entered the Texas juvenile justice system at 11. His offenses included kicking a school safety officer and spitting on a police officer. These were minor charges initially but escalated over time. Five years in secure custody followed due to worsening behavior and additional charges.
Joshua’s behavior deteriorated significantly during his time in custody. He engaged in self-harm and made multiple suicide attempts. Eventually, he was transferred to an adult prison. Tragically, at 16, he died by suicide in 2023.
Joshua’s story highlights the urgent need for more comprehensive psychiatric treatment options for youth. Addressing this issue could prevent future tragedies and reduce reliance on juvenile detention as the primary solution.
