Millions will watch Lamine Yamal and Spain face France in the World Cup semi-finals on Tuesday. Among them might be key figures from Yamal’s early life, though their roles remain somewhat mysterious to the public. Like many Spaniards, Yamal has two surnames—Nasraoui from his father and Ebana from his mother—but uses his first name professionally. This is similar to other Spanish footballers like Xavi and Pedri.
Yamal’s first name comprises two parts, akin to Paris Saint-Germain coach Luis Enrique. For both club and country, his jersey reads Lamine Yamal. Official documents, however, list his full name as Lamine Yamal Nasraoui Ebana.
In Arabic, Lamine signifies honesty, while Yamal translates to beauty or grace. These names suit his playing style. Children born in July 2007 to immigrants in Catalonia often have such names. Yamal’s father hails from Morocco, and his mother from Equatorial Guinea.
The twist, widely reported in Spanish media, is that Lamine and Yamal were chosen in gratitude to two friends who supported his parents. Ebana was only 16 when Yamal was born. The family needed financial help, and two male friends named Lamine and Yamal provided assistance.
Pictured with his parents and half-brother at the 2024 Ballon d’Or awards, Yamal’s journey began at 12 when he joined Barcelona’s La Masia academy. He has won La Liga titles with Barcelona and the 2024 European Championship with Spain. His contract, signed in 2025, is valued at €40 million annually before tax, and he holds endorsements with brands like Adidas and Coca-Cola.
Despite success, Yamal has frequently spoken about challenging early years for his parents and family in the impoverished Rocafonda area of Mataro. “My mum had me at 16,” Yamal said in a Cadena SER interview in July. His father sometimes scavenged for food. “This is real pressure,” he said, “not what I have.” His ‘304’ goal celebration is a nod to Rocafonda’s postcode. He often acknowledges his parents’ sacrifices enabling his career.
The identities of friends Lamine and Yamal remain undisclosed. The footballer and his family have not detailed the relationships or assistance provided. The reasons these benefactors stayed anonymous are unknown. Perhaps they value their privacy or prefer not to revisit past circumstances. But watching Tuesday’s match, they can surely feel proud of their generosity nearly two decades ago.
