San Francisco’s Political Shift: Embracing the Center

San Francisco voters are signaling a shift towards more centrist politics, moving away from the city’s traditional ultra-progressive stance. This change is highlighted in a Politico report which discusses Mayor Daniel Lurie’s success in establishing a centrist political coalition.

Mayor Lurie, alongside moderate allies, has created a substantial centrist political structure. Critics of the city’s pandemic-era decline are resonating with the efforts. A key component in advancing Lurie’s agenda is Believe in SF, a nonprofit advocacy group. This group has become a significant financial force in local politics. Its PAC recently raised around $1.8 million to support Lurie’s preferred candidates and ballot measures.

“The results were decisive: Two of Lurie’s moderate allies on the board of supervisors, Alan Wong and Stephen Sherrill, won competitive races decisively. Voters also rejected a union-led ballot measure, opposed by Lurie, which aimed to increase taxes on large corporations with high-paid CEOs,” Politico reported.

San Francisco’s shift is attributed to noticeable moderate campaign spending designed to diminish progressive influence. Organizations such as Neighbors for a Better San Francisco, supported by business and tech, are investing heavily to maintain a centrist trajectory.

Recent data from the San Francisco Chronicle indicates that Mayor Lurie holds a 74% approval rating. Factors contributing to his popularity include downtown revitalization and cleaner neighborhoods. Lurie, recognized as a moderate Democrat, gained office in 2024 after defeating incumbent London Breed. His victory symbolizes a counteraction against lenient policies on issues like crime, retail theft, drug markets, and homelessness that critics have linked to deteriorating living standards.

The political shift has drawn national attention; even President Donald Trump praised the city’s change in direction. Moderates have gained significant ground in recent supervisor elections, unseating progressive incumbents with substantial victories.

As Politico explains, Lurie maintains a firm hold on San Francisco politics, backed by a high approval rating and the city’s recent political centrism. Recently, inquiries to Lurie’s office for a comment by Fox News Digital went unanswered.
