On a memorable night in Philadelphia, Dylan Cease showcased his pitching prowess by striking out the side in the first inning. His performance, paired with ten relievers, led the American League (AL) to a commanding 4-0 victory over the National League (NL) in the All-Star Game.
Key Performances
All-Star MVP Cody Bellinger played a crucial role, delivering a two-run single. Ben Rice followed with an RBI single against Cristopher Sánchez of the Philadelphia Phillies in the first inning. Chicago White Sox’s Miguel Vargas added to the AL’s domination with a home run in the eighth inning, marking the game’s only extra-base hit off Dodgers’ Justin Wrobleski.
The AL’s win marks their 18th victory in 23 games, extending their overall lead to 49-45-2. Despite their efforts, the NL managed only three hits, failing to advance any runner beyond first base. The game highlighted impressive pitching with a combined total of 27 strikeouts, 15 by AL pitchers.
Cease’s first inning was historic. He struck out Kyle Schwarber, Juan Soto, and CJ Abrams, joining a select group of seven pitchers to achieve this feat in an All-Star opening inning, which includes four Hall of Famers.
Pitching Strategies
Besides Cease, pitchers like Parker Messick, Michael Wacha, and Aroldis Chapman contributed to the first All-Star shutout since 2013. Several top starters, including Shohei Ohtani, were unavailable. With few pitches reaching 100 mph, Sánchez struggled, laboring through a 34-pitch inning with multiple hits and walks.
Mike Trout, back after a gap since 2019, was unable to make an impact, going 0 for 3 with a strikeout.
Game Events
In the third inning, a 97.6 mph sinker from Riley O’Brien forced Junior Caminero of Tampa Bay to exit early after being hit on the hand. Fortunately, X-rays showed no fractures.
Ceremonial Touches
Players entered through Liberty Bell replicas, signing an oversized lineup card with feathered quills, reminiscent of historical scenes. The field featured 13 stars symbolizing the original Colonies. A fireworks display followed a tribute video featuring Ray Charles at the end of the fourth inning.
This year’s All-Star Game had a longer preparation time coinciding with the U.S. 250th anniversary. The Phillies previously hosted the event in various years, with the Athletics hosting it in the mid-20th century. Noteworthy events included a 1996 mishap when Cal Ripken Jr. suffered a broken nose during a team picture.
Next year, the All-Star Game will be at Wrigley Field, Chicago, though potential labor issues loom.
