In Philadelphia, the American League showcased remarkable pitching skill, leading to a 4-0 victory over the National League in the All-Star Game. Dylan Cease struck out the side in the first inning, joining ten other relievers in a combined three-hitter performance. The AL’s pitching dominance resulted in 15 strikeouts, contributing to their 18th win in 23 games and an overall lead of 49-45-2.
Cody Bellinger took home the MVP honors, hitting a two-run single, followed by Ben Rice’s RBI single in the first inning against Cristopher Sánchez of the Philadelphia Phillies. Miguel Vargas provided the sole extra-base hit with an eighth-inning home run against Dodgers pitcher Justin Wrobleski, who was celebrating his 26th birthday while managing five strikeouts in two innings.
The National League struggled offensively, securing only three hits from Juan Soto, Pete Crow-Armstrong, and Otto Lopez, failing to advance any runner past first base. Dylan Cease made history by striking out Kyle Schwarber, Juan Soto, and CJ Abrams around a walk in the first inning, becoming one of only seven pitchers to achieve this feat in an All-Star Game opening inning.
The AL’s relievers included Parker Messick, Michael Wacha, Joe Ryan, Nick Martinez, Cade Smith, Drew Rasmussen, Jacob Latz, Louis Varland, Aroldis Chapman, and Bryan Baker, completing the first All-Star shutout since 2013’s 2-0 victory at New York’s Citi Field.
Several star pitchers were absent, including Jacob Misoriowski, Paul Skenes, and Shohei Ohtani. Notably, the number of pitches reaching 100 mph was the lowest since 2021.
Sánchez, who faced difficulty in the first inning, said through an interpreter, “It just took me a little time to soak it all in and enjoy it.” Mike Trout, making his return to the All-Star Game, went 0 for 3 with a strikeout along with Dodgers players Max Muncy, Andy Pages, and Freddie Freeman, while Yoshinobu Yamamoto did not pitch.
During the game, Tampa Bay’s Junior Caminero exited early after being hit on his left hand by a 97.6-mph sinker from Riley O’Brien. Caminero, ranked fourth in the majors with 28 home runs, had negative X-rays.
In a nod to history, managers and starters entered through replica Liberty Bells at each dugout, walked to home plate, and used feather quills to sign an oversized lineup card, symbolizing the signing of the Declaration of Independence. The dirt bore 13 stars to represent the original Colonies.
Fireworks followed the fourth inning along with a video featuring Ray Charles’s performance of “America the Beautiful” from the 2001 World Series. Philadelphia’s extended lead time for hosting the All-Star Game aligned with the U.S. 250th anniversary. The Phillies have hosted previous games in 1976 and 1996 at Veterans Stadium, while the Athletics hosted in 1943 and 1952 at Shibe Park.
Looking ahead, next year’s All-Star Game will be held at Wrigley Field, marking the first time for the Chicago Cubs since 1990.
