Flights at Ronald Reagan National Airport experienced significant disruptions on Tuesday. Security measures were implemented to protect Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi during his U.S. visit, causing more than a hundred flight cancellations and widespread delays.
Commercial aircraft were grounded or unable to land from 11 a.m. ET to around 3 p.m. On FlightAware, over 300 delays and at least 126 cancellations were noted. The airport area is one of the busiest in the nation, with commercial flights navigating the heavily monitored airspace shared with military traffic.
Efforts were made to reduce the impact of these disruptions. White House and Federal Aviation Administration officials provided updates as al-Zaidi visited D.C. During this period, some aircraft in holding patterns landed, and others on the ground were allowed to take off.
President Donald Trump hosted Ali al-Zaidi, newly elected in May, to discuss U.S.-Iraq relations. Their meeting extended to an unplanned lunch, which Trump described positively due to their good rapport. Al-Zaidi’s motorcade departed for the Pentagon later than expected, navigating through restricted airspace with aerial security present.
Al-Zaidi’s ascension followed Trump’s warning to withdraw U.S. backing for Iraq if a pro-Iran candidate prevailed. Iraq’s new government, balancing a challenging relationship with Iran, urged Iran-aligned militias to disband by September 30, as U.S. troop withdrawal approaches.
The four-month-old U.S. conflict with Iran raises security alarms both in the Middle East and within the United States. Counterterrorism specialists have noted Iran’s historical activities within U.S. borders, including attempts at kidnappings and assassination plots through a network of proxies.
Domestic concerns persist due to recent threats against Trump. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth met with lawmakers Tuesday night to discuss a proposed $1.5 trillion military budget. This budget, focusing on weapons and defense enhancements, is said to address emerging critical threats.
The FBI recently thwarted an alleged plot involving sniper attacks and drone strikes on a UFC event at the White House. Eight individuals faced charges; drone recovery remains ongoing, with plans seemingly in developmental phases.
