Conor McGregor is grappling with a tough recovery following a severe knee injury sustained during his UFC 329 fight against Max Holloway. The 38-year-old fighter from Ireland has pledged on social media to make a return to the Octagon after undergoing surgery on his right knee. He intends to complete the remaining bout on his UFC contract.
If this marks McGregor’s final fight, the list of opponents eager to face him is extensive. Fighters such as Holloway, Michael Chandler, Nate Diaz, Justin Gaethje, and Ilia Topuria are among those likely to seize the opportunity for a noteworthy match. However, one opponent may particularly interest McGregor: Dustin Poirier.
Although Poirier, aged 37, retired after his UFC 318 match against Holloway for the ‘BMF’ championship, he recently expressed openness to a possible fourth match with McGregor. He admitted that the prospect of facing McGregor once more would tempt him out of retirement.
“Whenever he is healed up, hit me up, Conor,” Poirier said to MMA Junkie. “I’ll come back and whip you again. I’d come back to whip him again — at 170.”
Previously, McGregor and Poirier clashed three times. McGregor secured victory in their first encounter with a swift first-round TKO at UFC 178 in 2014. However, Poirier won the subsequent two meetings. The last fight ended when McGregor broke his left leg at the end of Round 1. Poirier’s victory in their second encounter, achieved via strikes, earned him a Performance of the Night bonus and bolstered his position in the lightweight title scene.
