Chipotle Mexican Grill is opening its first restaurant in Mexico. This marks the introduction of U.S.-style Mexican-inspired fast-casual food to the country. The new location will open on Thursday in San Pedro Garza García, Nuevo León. This area is part of the Monterrey metropolitan region. Chipotle has partnered with Alsea, a restaurant operator that handles brands like Starbucks, Domino’s Pizza, Burger King, and Chili’s.
The new restaurant will feature Chipotle’s standard menu. Customers can expect customizable burritos, bowls, salads, tacos, and quesadillas. This opening follows a development agreement made in April 2025 between Chipotle and Alsea. The two companies plan to open more restaurants in Nuevo León this year and expand to Mexico City by 2027. Monterrey is seen as an ideal starting point. This is due to its strong economy, a growing population, and its reputation as a hub for business and innovation.
Chipotle’s CEO, Scott Boatwright, expressed respect for Mexico’s culinary traditions. Nate Lawton, the chief business development officer, mentioned the first restaurant would be a proof-of-concept. This location will help them understand local consumer preferences.
The cautious approach is notable given past examples, such as Taco Bell’s failed ventures in Mexico.
Taco Bell entered the Mexican market in 1992 with a food cart in Mexico City. It sold soft-shell tacos, burritos, and Pepsi. However, the effort failed due to high prices and unfamiliar choices like hard-shell tacos. Taco Bell renamed them as “Tacostada,” but all locations shut down by 1994. They tried again in 2007, branding themselves as an American chain instead of competing directly with local taquerias. Despite including items like french fries, the effort did not last. Since 2007, no new Taco Bell locations have opened in Mexico.
Peter Backman, a consultant, noted these failures arose from direct competition with local taquerias. Chipotle avoids direct competition, instead offering trusted ingredients in a fast-casual format. Chipotle also benefits from Alsea’s local expertise, unlike Taco Bell’s past attempts.
International Expansion Plans
Chipotle is also focusing on broader international growth. The Alshaya Group runs 15 Chipotle restaurants in the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, and Qatar. This follows a 2023 development agreement. They plan to enter Asia through a joint venture with SPC Group. Openings in South Korea are planned later this year and Singapore early next year. Chipotle currently has over 80 locations in Canada, 20 in the U.K., six in France, and two in Germany.
The company operates more than 4,100 restaurants globally. They aim to open 350 to 370 new locations by 2026.
