Lucas Haas, a standout pitcher from Valparaiso, has captured attention even before stepping into the college baseball scene. His performance last summer showcased a 91 mph fastball with an impressive spin rate, making him a prospect impossible to overlook.
“I participated in the Future Games last summer before the recruitment window opened,” Haas shared. “When August 1 arrived and the window opened, many schools reached out. Activity slowed as fall approached, but a few schools maintained contact through winter. It picked up again after the latest high school season.” In his junior year, Haas posted a 6-2 record with a 2.58 ERA and 66 strikeouts over 46 innings, leading the Vikings to a 23-8 season and a Class 4A sectional championship.
Indiana, Notre Dame, and Purdue showed interest. However, Cincinnati emerged as the frontrunner. “After an initial visit, Cincinnati stayed on my radar through winter and into my school season,” Haas explained. On July 8, he committed to the Bearcats, drawn by their recent NCAA Tournament appearances under coach Jordan Bischel. “I trust the coaches to develop me. It’s rare for freshmen to start or develop immediately, but I believe I can contribute significantly to their program,” he said.
Valparaiso coach Todd Evans praises Haas for his ambitions beyond the norm. “He aims to be all-state and wants us to win at all levels,” Evans stated. “His individual goals benefit the entire team. There’s immense potential in Lucas.” Haas, known for his competitive spirit, values his determination over raw talent. He stated, “My drive to surpass my rivals is unmatched. If Cincinnati gives me a chance, I’ll prove my worth.”
Haas’ father, Ryan, urges him to maintain this mentality. “Committing doesn’t end the journey; it begins a new chapter. Lucas has broader goals post-college,” Ryan Haas emphasized. “Consistent effort and self-challenge are essential for success.”
Lucas Haas relishes his upcoming senior season with Valparaiso, hoping for another state run. “I want to enjoy my final year with my teammates while aiming for victory,” he noted. Anticipating his college career, Haas expressed eagerness to join the Cincinnati team, stating, “I’m ready to build connections with the team and prioritize winning.”
