The F.B.I. is investigating a leak connected to a plane gifted by Qatar, used by President Trump for a recent trip to Turkey. As part of the investigation, the bureau has sought to interview several people who traveled on the jet with the President, asking some to hand over their phones.
Sources with knowledge of the situation report that the F.B.I. particularly aims to speak with members of the U.S. Secret Service who accompanied Mr. Trump. This information, provided under conditions of anonymity due to the sensitive nature of the matter, reveals that Secret Service leadership has instructed their officials to forward any external requests to legal representatives.
The F.B.I. and the Secret Service have both declined to comment on the ongoing investigation.
This inquiry follows the administration’s issuance of subpoenas to multiple New York Times reporters late on Friday. These subpoenas demand their testimony before a grand jury in Manhattan this week. The Times has criticized this action, viewing it as an effort to intimidate the press.
Kash Patel, the F.B.I. director, and Susie Wiles, the White House chief of staff, are spearheading the investigation. Their goal is to pinpoint the source of the leak concerning security concerns of the new Air Force One, as detailed in two separate articles by The Times last week.
