Nike, known for its strong stance on diversity, found itself under scrutiny from the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (E.E.O.C.) following a detailed 26-page memo by Andrea Lucas. Lucas, a political appointee during Donald Trump’s presidency, argued that Nike had been discriminating against white employees and applicants.
In May 2024, the memo alleged that Nike’s diversity targets possibly influenced employment decisions, impacting white candidates. This allegation led to a civil rights investigation into the company. Lucas emphasized the urgency of the matter, aiming to prevent large-scale discrimination.
Nike’s dedication to diversity was visible in its advertising and workforce initiatives. However, Lucas’s investigation at the E.E.O.C. showed a different perspective. As chair of the commission, her actions against Nike provided a framework for further probes.
For years, the E.E.O.C. examined employer practices for potential discrimination based on race, sex, disability, or national origin. The agency also assisted companies aiming to boost diversity in response to past discriminatory hiring practices.
