Fundraising Dynamics in Illinois Governor and Senate Races

In the race for governor of Illinois, Republican nominee Darren Bailey is contesting incumbent Democratic Governor JB Pritzker. Bailey raised about $1.33 million while spending over $1.28 million in the months following his primary win on March 17, as reported by state campaign finance records. Bailey’s fundraising significantly exceeded other Republican candidates in recent times, including U.S. Senate nominee Don Tracy, who is running against Lt. Gov. Juliana Stratton to replace Democratic Sen. Dick Durbin.

Bailey, a conservative figure from southern Illinois, started July with under $128,000 in his campaign fund. In contrast, Pritzker had over $3.1 million remaining. Bailey’s current funding mainly comes from small donations under $150, while a fundraising video urged supporters to donate $5, $25, or $50.

Pritzker, a billionaire, spent $350 million on his first two campaigns and began his third term campaign with $25.5 million. Meanwhile, Collin Corbett entered the race as an independent candidate with over $379,000, primarily sourced from a $500,000 loan he made to his campaign.

Campaign spending strategies vary. Pritzker invested nearly $6.9 million from April to June on advertising and staffing. Conversely, Bailey spent over $914,000 on direct mail fundraising, which drew criticism due to its high percentage of overall spending.

Corbett secured his spot on the ballot after Bailey’s campaign withdrew its challenge. Corbett expects boosting fundraising now that he is confirmed on the ballot.

Senate Race and Other Key Contests

In the Senate race, Stratton’s funds far outpaced those of Don Tracy, who raised nearly $133,000 against her $1.1 million, supplemented by Democratic Party contributions. Tracy, who has previously lent his campaign $2 million, had about $1.5 million remaining by June.

Despite raising significant amounts, Stratton’s campaign sought additional support, signaling potential funding gaps. Tracy acknowledged the difficulty of fundraising as a Republican in Illinois.

Down Ballot and Local Race Dynamics

Statewide, the Republican Party in Illinois continues its financial struggles against the Democratic Party’s robust funding. Gary Rabine remains a major individual contributor to Bailey’s campaign, donating $25,000 in addition to his spring contribution.

Alexi Giannoulias holds substantial funds for future political aspirations, while GOP candidate Diane Harris trails significantly. In the attorney general race, Kwame Raoul has a considerable financial lead over Republican Bob Fioretti.

The comptroller race saw Margaret Croke hold more funds compared to GOP contender Bryan Drew. Notably, no Republicans filed for the state treasurer primary, marking a rarity in state political history.
