The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has submitted a formal request for Florida officials to hand over Akbor Miah, an illegal immigrant from Bangladesh accused of murdering his sister-in-law. Miah, who has also gone by the alias Shahidul Islam, was previously deported under the Trump administration and has since reentered the United States illegally.
Officials from DHS informed Fox News Digital that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has filed a detainer against Miah. They are asking for his transfer to federal custody following the conclusion of his state criminal proceedings.
Background of Akbor Miah’s Immigration Status
Miah entered the United States in 2016, during the Obama administration. He was arrested by ICE in February 2018, leading to an immigration judge issuing a final order for his removal later that year. Deported to Bangladesh in January 2019, he committed a federal felony by illegally reentering the country. The Biden administration released him back into the U.S. on March 19, 2022.
Allegations and Charges Against Miah
Miah’s sister-in-law, Monica Islam, was found dead from a gunshot wound in Lake County, Florida, in May 2025. Authorities have accused Miah of her murder. Islam was last seen leaving a convenience store in Eustis, where she worked with Miah. Her body was found along a road in Mount Dora just hours after her disappearance.
Forensic investigators recovered Monica Islam’s DNA from Miah’s vehicle. Additional evidence, such as a bullet lodged in the passenger-side door and a shattered passenger window, was also found.
Efforts to Apprehend Akbor Miah
Authorities claim Miah fled to New York following the killing. He was subsequently apprehended by the U.S. Marshals Service and extradited to Florida to face charges of first-degree murder.
“This illegal alien from Bangladesh has been charged with murder after allegedly shooting his own sister-in-law in Florida,” noted DHS acting Assistant Secretary Lauren Bis. “Thanks to our law enforcement partners, this criminal illegal alien has been arrested and is off our streets. ICE has lodged a detainer so he can never be loose in our country again.”
Legal Proceedings and Evidence
A Lake County grand jury indicted Miah on charges of premeditated first-degree murder, with prosecutors seeking the death penalty. State Attorney Bill Gladson revealed evidence pointing to suspicious internet searches conducted by Miah on the day of the murder.
Gladson provided an update on the Lake County case, highlighting how Miah rented a vehicle and drove to New York post-incident. Authorities located him through a collaborative effort involving local, state, and federal agencies.
