Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ Dominates Box Office

Christopher Nolan’s adaptation of “The Odyssey” took the top spot at the box office this weekend, raking in approximately $124.5 million in ticket sales across the United States and Canada. This nearly three-hour epic by Nolan, who has become a significant draw in his own right, transforms Homer’s ancient poem into a blockbuster hit.

In recent years, Hollywood has preferred to invest in established franchises, but Nolan maintains a unique position. His name alone can attract audiences. The opening of “The Odyssey” highlights this, being the first feature filmed entirely in IMAX.

According to data from Rentrak, the film achieved the largest domestic debut of the year for a live-action movie. It trails only “Toy Story 5” and “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” among all 2026 releases. A significant number of attendees cited Nolan as the main reason for watching the film, with the ensemble cast coming in second. This star-studded cast includes Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Zendaya, and others.

IMAX screenings accounted for 24% of the opening weekend’s revenue. Such demand led AMC Entertainment to offer early morning screenings, with many selling out. IMAX CEO Rich Gelfond noted the impressive presales, indicating that the film’s popularity is expected to continue in the weeks ahead.
