The 2026 FIFA World Cup Final has been historic in several ways. Argentina had the chance to become the first consecutive champion since Brazil’s victory in 1962. This event also proved to be one of the most costly sporting spectacles ever and concluded the most attended World Cup in history.
A groundbreaking feature of this final was the first World Cup halftime show, curated by Chris Martin of Coldplay. The performance, relatively short by Super Bowl standards, included various artists such as Madonna, The Muppets, BTS, and Justin Bieber. Conductor Gustavo Dudamel led, with Jason Sudeikis appearing as Ted Lasso, and Shakira performing alongside Burna Boy. The show concluded with a group of children singing on the field.
During the halftime show in East Rutherford, N.J., BTS performed energetically. Madonna began her act from the tunnel, moving onto the field to enormous cheers. Dudamel led The Muppets in “Seven Nation Army,” and BTS sang “Dynamite,” an iconic hit. Ted Lasso humorously introduced Bieber, who performed “Everything Hallelujah.” He adjusted its lyrics to include the “World Cup.”
Shakira, joined by Burna Boy, performed “Dai Dai,” the official tournament anthem, with dynamic backup dancers. The final act featured children singing about “love,” accompanied by Chris Martin and other artists.
Some drew favorable comparisons to Bad Bunny’s Super Bowl show, praising its clarity and energy. However, others felt the 27-minute duration stretched the break too long. Former soccer star Wayne Rooney criticized it on BBC, while many agreed it was well-executed without overstaying its welcome.
The match itself lacked excitement initially, with Spain and Argentina struggling to create scoring chances. Despite debates about its necessity, the halftime show’s success suggests it might become part of future World Cup Finals.
