U.S. Ambassador Criticizes Political Motives
The U.S. ambassador to the United Nations has accused Zohran Mamdani of engaging in political theater. This criticism follows New York City’s Democratic mayor expressing intent to arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu if he visits the city later this year.

Mamdani mentioned he is reviewing options to arrest Netanyahu during his planned visit for the United Nations General Assembly in September. In a discussion with the New York Times, Mamdani revealed being in active dialogue with the city’s legal offices about his authority. He stated, “Whatever the law allows me to do in New York City, that’s what we will do, but we won’t be writing our own laws to that end.”
Response from Ambassador Mike Waltz
In response, Mike Waltz, the U.S. representative to the international organization, called Mamdani’s remarks “pure political theater.” He asserted that the mayor lacks legal authority under both international and U.S. law to carry out such an action. Newsweek reached out to the New York City Mayor’s office and the Israeli prime minister’s office for comment.
World Leaders Convening for the General Assembly
World leaders from various member states, including the Israeli leader, are set to travel to New York City in September for the UN General Assembly. Waltz, previously the U.S. national security adviser, emphasized the improbability of Mamdani successfully arresting Netanyahu due to several complex legal points.
Legal Complexities Against Arrest
Waltz highlighted that the U.S. has never ratified the Rome Statute, the treaty establishing the International Criminal Court (ICC) in 1998. Consequently, the U.S. is not obligated to adhere to its jurisdiction or enforce its judgments. He also pointed to head-of-state immunity and the UN Headquarters Agreement, which provides legal protections to foreign diplomats attending UN sessions.
Motives Behind Mamdani’s Intentions
Mamdani’s desire to arrest Netanyahu is rooted in a warrant issued by the ICC in November 2024. The ICC, a permanent international tribunal in The Hague, Netherlands, investigates serious offenses. The warrant was issued after probing into Israeli military actions in Gaza, where judges found “reasonable grounds to believe” Netanyahu was responsible for alleged crimes like starvation as warfare and attacks on civilians.
Netanyahu’s Planned Visit Remains
Despite Mamdani’s comments, Netanyahu plans on visiting New York. He discussed his intentions during a virtual interview with The New York Times’ Dealbook Summit in December. Mamdani holds that Netanyahu belongs in The Hague, classifying him as a war criminal charged by the International Criminal Court.
Mamdani stated in his interview with the New York Times, “He’s a war criminal who has been charged by the International Criminal Court. And what you will find is that is an opinion held by many, purely because of what his actions have wrought over these last many years.”
