Authorities reported a tragic incident on July 20, 2026, when five people drowned in the Scioto River near Powell, Ohio. The group was initially believed to have been on a fishing trip before the incident occurred, according to the county sheriff.
One member of the group decided to swim in the river, which led to a series of tragic events. When the swimmer began to struggle, other members of the group attempted a rescue, but they also faced difficulties in the water.
A passing motorist noticed a scared child, who had been with the group, running along a nearby road and shouting for their mother. The motorist alerted authorities by calling 911.
Delaware County Sheriff Jeffrey Balzer informed during a news conference that two children under the age of ten are now under the care of family services. Among them is the child who sought help.
Rescue crews conducted a search on Sunday and discovered the bodies of two women. They were transported to a hospital where they were pronounced dead. On Monday, the bodies of three men were retrieved from the river, as confirmed by Tracy Whited, spokesperson for the Delaware County Sheriff’s Department.
Authorities are handling the notifications for the next of kin for each victim.
This incident occurred shortly after another tragic event in southern Utah. Five family members lost their lives in a flash flood while hiking through canyons.
