Protests Surge as Police Shoot Man in Madison

In Madison, Wisconsin, protests demanding accountability intensified following the fatal shooting of Corey Ruiz by a police officer. Identified as a local community member in his 30s, Ruiz was killed after allegedly pulling a knife during a struggle with four officers.

A news conference became contentious as protesters interrupted Madison Police Chief John Patterson for 20 minutes. Protesters demanded the arrest of the officer involved in the incident. Madison’s City Council President, Sabrina Madison, emphasized Ruiz’s family ties, noting, “Ruiz has a family who loves him. I believe Corey has a child.” Attempts to contact Ruiz’s family were unsuccessful.

Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway stressed that encounters with law enforcement should not result in loss of life. She assured a thorough investigation into the shooting. Chief Patterson confirmed the case is currently “an open and active homicide investigation.” The Wisconsin Department of Justice’s Division of Criminal Investigation leads the inquiry and will disclose the identity of the officer who discharged his weapon.

The incident unfolded in Madison’s Marquette neighborhood, following reports of someone checking vehicle doors and stealing bicycles. Officers located Ruiz, who attempted to escape by cycling through backyards. A confrontation occurred at an intersection where Ruiz reportedly drew a fixed-blade knife, injuring an officer.

A memorial for Corey Ruiz was established, and videos of the incident surfaced on social media. One widely shared video showed officers grappling with Ruiz, with shouts of “He’s got a knife!” and “Let go!” heard in the background. A stun gun was deployed but proved ineffective. The injured officer fired three rounds at Ruiz, who then became unresponsive.

None of the four officers involved wore body cameras. Following protocol, all officers will be placed on administrative leave while the independent investigation is conducted. This incident echoes past events in Madison, occurring near the sites where previous police shootings took place. A vigil for Ruiz is scheduled for the community.

Madison encouraged the public to push local and state officials for justice for Ruiz. They questioned the rapid escalation to lethal force, expressing disbelief over its appropriateness. Calls for legislative changes to such directives were urged if the actions were deemed justified.
