The ongoing conflict in the Middle East has already led to the cancellation of two Formula 1 races initially planned for the early season. This situation might pave the way for Malaysia’s Sepang Circuit to make an unexpected return. According to a report from ESPN, the Sepang Circuit could become a viable alternative if F1 cannot reschedule the Bahrain Grand Prix.
The Bahrain and Saudi Arabian Grands Prix were both set for April, but tension in the Middle East removed them from the calendar. This created a month-long gap in the racing schedule. As Formula 1 looks for solutions, the possibility of hosting a race in Malaysia is gaining traction. Logistically, it fits well, since the next scheduled race after the proposed Oct. 4 weekend is in Singapore the following week.
The Jeddah Corniche Street Circuit race in Saudi Arabia is off the table for this season. However, there was hope that the Bahrain event could find a new date. The latest tensions in the region bring uncertainty to the final races in Qatar and Abu Dhabi. This increases the urgency for F1 to finalize plans.
Malaysia’s Sepang Circuit was a fan favorite, known for its hot and humid conditions. It remained part of the F1 calendar from 1999 to 2017. Its return would likely excite Formula 1 enthusiasts.
The FIA’s World Motor Sport Council plans to meet this weekend to discuss the current Middle East racing schedule. It is not just F1 facing challenges. The World Endurance Championship canceled its race in Qatar earlier this year. Questions linger about its Bahrain finale scheduled for early November.
