Recent Assaults in Manhattan
A suspect has been apprehended following the stabbing of two men on Manhattan’s Upper West Side on Thursday. Authorities have described these as apparent antisemitic attacks. The New York City Police Department (NYPD) noted that one of the victims is Jewish. Witnesses reported the suspect shouting ‘Allahu Akbar’ during the incidents.
Currently, investigators are determining whether to classify these attacks as hate crimes. The suspect, Raul Morales, 51, has been identified in connection with both attacks.
Official Statements and Immediate Response
Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch conveyed that detectives are examining witness and victim accounts, which indicate that Morales shouted ‘Allahu Akbar’ during the attacks. NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani commented on the events, labeling the stabbings as horrifying and acknowledged that the victims included an Asian and a Jewish man.
Mamdani praised the rapid NYPD response: ‘The NYPD responded immediately and apprehended Raul Morales related to both incidents. I am thankful to the officers for their quick actions.’
Locations and Details of the Attacks
The stabbings occurred near West 84th Street and Central Park West, an area known for its significant Jewish community. The attacks, while separate, were in close proximity to each other.
A 57-year-old man suffered a stab wound to the back and was conscious when found. He was hospitalized in stable condition. A 50-year-old man nearby had a torso stab wound, also remaining conscious and in stable condition upon hospitalization.
Initial reports suggest mental health issues may have contributed, though no prior history with the NYPD is known. The weapon used may have been a knife or screwdriver, as per ongoing investigations.
Community Reaction and Commitment to Safety
New York City Council Speaker Julie Menin expressed outrage and called for unity against antisemitism. She emphasized that Jewish fear is genuine and condemned the vicious acts occurring in the city.
Assembly member Micah Lasher confirmed active communication with the police and community leaders, showing solidarity with the impacted families and requesting updates.
Governor Kathy Hochul stated her revulsion at the apparent antisemitic nature of the attacks, reinforcing New York’s diverse unity, and declaring legal action against divisive misconduct.
