In a deadly event on Friday in the occupied West Bank, four Palestinians and one Israeli lost their lives. This tragic incident took place near the Palestinian city of Nablus, as confirmed by Israeli and Palestinian health officials.
The Israeli military reported that it was called to the location after receiving alerts about an attack on Israeli civilians who were hiking in the area. According to the military, a Palestinian took a weapon from local security personnel and fired at these civilians.
On the Palestinian side, officials claimed that Palestinians from the West Bank town of Tal faced aggression by Israeli civilians. Reports indicate that four Palestinians were killed and four others were wounded by both civilians and soldiers from Israel.
Meanwhile, mourners gathered to grieve over a Palestinian man’s body who was killed that day, as captured by photographer Jaafar Ashtiyeh for AFP via Getty Images.
In reaction to the violence, authorities imposed a temporary closure on Nablus and the nearby Tal area. Israeli troops set up roadblocks and sought the perpetrators, as stated by the military.
In response to the incident, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called for an emergency meeting to plan a response, as mentioned in an official statement.
According to Essam Saifi, a local leader from the Palestinian Fatah party residing in Tal, around 25 to 30 Jewish settlers initially attacked Tal’s eastern part, attempting to invade two homes. Residents confronted them, and the settlers began shooting, Saifi shared with Reuters.
Saifi further described a second attack by Israelis about thirty minutes later, targeting Tal’s western side, where a minor was injured. The chaos resulted in the arrival of the Israeli military, who joined the settlers in firing, Saifi explained to Reuters.
