The chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC), Karim Khan, was relieved of his duties. This decision follows nearly two years of claims regarding sexual misconduct.
The ICC, facing significant challenges, sees the United States actively trying to weaken the institution. The removal of Khan comes after a substantial endorsement from 125 member states. They cited “serious misconduct and a serious breach of duty.” The Assembly of States Parties, overseeing the court, made this announcement.
Liz Evenson, international justice director at Human Rights Watch, commented on the situation. She emphasized the importance of maintaining a safe workplace. She highlighted the need for credible mechanisms to address any forms of abuse.
“The ICC should hold itself to the highest standards,” Evenson stated.
An accusatory account against Khan outlined a relationship with a female aide. Allegations involved him attempting to prevent her from making her claims. His defense team criticized the process, arguing that Khan lacked the chance to defend himself fully. Tayab Ali, a representative for Khan, indicated plans to challenge the verdict legally.
The Trump administration’s pressure on the ICC remains a significant issue. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced intentions to dismantle the ICC’s threats to U.S. sovereignty. Rubio’s strategies include encouraging member countries to leave the court and imposing sanctions.
Following the decision, Venezuela declared its departure from the ICC. Their Foreign Minister, Félix Plasencia, cited bias, pointing to the court’s focus on certain regions.
Earlier, the ICC ceased an investigation concerning U.S. sanctions against Venezuela. However, inquiries into possible crimes by Venezuelan security under former President Nicolás Maduro continue.
The ICC’s efforts have intertwined with investigations into other geopolitical matters, including actions in Gaza. Measures against Netanyahu and other Israeli figures remain unaffected for now.
