New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani recently acknowledged that he lacks the legal authority to arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. This admission has done little to ease tensions between Mamdani and the Jewish community. Jewish leaders remain concerned about Mamdani’s rhetoric, which they believe deepens divisions at a time of heightened concern over antisemitism.
Since his campaign for mayor, Israel has been a key point of tension between Mamdani and New York City’s Jewish community. Initially, Mamdani stated he would seek to arrest Netanyahu, prompting criticism about his lack of legal authority, something he finally admitted to on Tuesday.
The issue resurfaced after Mamdani released a video explaining that while City Hall can’t arrest Netanyahu, he believes the Prime Minister should be held accountable under the International Criminal Court’s warrant. In this video, Mamdani labeled Netanyahu a “war criminal” and accused him of being the architect of genocide against Palestinians.
Mamdani stated, “My administration has reviewed every avenue available under applicable law to determine whether New York City could execute the International Criminal Court’s arrest warrant if Benjamin Netanyahu came here. It is clear that we do not have the independent legal authority to enforce this warrant.” However, he emphasized that Netanyahu is “not welcome in New York City.”
Jewish leaders expressed that Mamdani’s legal concession did little to address concerns about his rhetoric, which is seen as divisive. During a news conference, Mamdani highlighted New Yorkers’ right to protest, noting that protest is a foundation of New York City’s identity.
Despite Mamdani’s stance, Orthodox Union Executive Vice President and COO Rabbi Dr. Josh Joseph voiced concerns about the risk of inciting further violence due to misinformation. He cited violent protests in recent years as evidence.
Manhattan Jewish Experience Founder and Director Rabbi Mark Wildes criticized Mamdani for displaying hostility towards Israel rather than specific policies of the Prime Minister. Wildes argued Mamdani’s remarks reflect a continued message against Israel’s right to exist and the Jewish people’s right to self-defense.
Wildes and Joseph are confident in the resilience of New York’s Jewish community, asserting that political tensions won’t sever their connection to Israel or the city. Wildes noted, “Am Yisrael Chai is not just a slogan. Am Yisrael Chai means the Jewish people are alive. Israel is thriving, and Israel is continuing to grow.”
Mamdani’s office did not respond to requests for comment on the ongoing discourse.
