Devastating Wildfires Force Mass Evacuation in France and Spain

Wildfires in France and Spain have led to the evacuation of over 200,000 people. In France alone, more than 167,000 individuals have been displaced due to ongoing fires, as confirmed by French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu. As of Saturday night, at least 30 fires were active across the country, with the worst in the Gironde and Landes regions, according to President Emmanuel Macron.

The Gironde fire, near Bordeaux, remained uncontrolled Saturday night. The Interior Minister, Laurent Nuñez, noted that France has seen approximately 242,000 acres burned this year, setting a historic record. Prime Minister Lecornu highlighted the critical conditions in the Gironde area, emphasizing the challenge posed by sudden weather changes.

Additionally, the wildfires are impacting the Tour de France, shortening the route for the final stage as resources were redirected to fire efforts.

In Spain, officials reported the death of a person in Manises, Valencia, due to the fires. Spain’s Interior Ministry announced the evacuation of around 60,000 people in Ávila and Madrid. Moreover, Madrid saw more than 29,000 individuals evacuated, with 20,000 confined. In Ávila, over 30,000 were evacuated, and 8,000 remain confined.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez stated that the government is actively providing shelter for those affected by the fires.
